Six years after gaining independence from Britain, Nigeria witnessed its first military coup in January, 1966. Six month after the first coup, there was a second coup in July, 1966. These two coups were bloody. In the second coup, General Aguiyi-Ironsi, the then Military Head of State was killed together with Col. Adekunle Fajuyi in Ibadan where Ironsi went on a visit. They were killed by soldiers said to be of Northern extraction of the country. The coup was described as a counter coup. This video narrates the events that surrounded the arrest, assassination and burial of Ironsi and Fajuyi and the emergence of Yakubu Gowon as the new Military Head of State.
