North Korea is “significantly benefiting” from its troops fighting alongside Russia against Ukraine, US officials warned on January 8, 2024. Deputy US Ambassador to the UN Dorothy Camille Shea told the UN Security Council that the experience gained by North Korean troops in Ukraine is making Pyongyang “more capable of waging war against its neighbours”. North Korea and Russia rejected the claim, with North Korea’s UN Ambassador Kim Song accusing the US of double standards. Diplomatic and military ties between Moscow and Pyongyang have deepened since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
