The EORI System
EORI is short for Economic Operators Registration and Identification and was created to ease customs operation at EU level.
Even if Switzerland is not an EU state, companies registered here must follow the EORI regulations in most cases.
Who Must Register for the EORI System?
The following economic operators are required to apply for EORI numbers:
• domestic companies engaged in customs operations in EU states,
• Swiss residents and citizens engaged in customs trading in EU states.
Swiss Businesses Applying for EORI Numbers
In order to obtain EORI numbers, local companies must first register for VAT in Switzerland.
Natural persons must also obtain VAT numbers when importing or exporting goods into/from Switzerland which must go through Customs.
Import Regulations in Switzerland
EU companies can use the EORI numbers obtained in their home countries when importing goods from Switzerland.
Swiss companies do not need EORI numbers when importing goods from EU states.
Export Regulations in Switzerland
Swiss companies exporting goods into the European Union must apply for EORI numbers.
Such a number must be obtained in the first EU state a company exports goods to.
How to Obtain an EORI Number
The following documents need to be filed in order to register for EORI from Switzerland:
1. information about the company,
2. the VAT number,
3. the application form.
Format of the EORI Number
The EORI number contains the EU country code of the country issuing it followed by the company's VAT number.
