Top: With nine minutes remaining, Charlton were winning 1-0 and Barnsley were losing 2-1. If these results had stood, Charlton would have been promoted to the Premiership. However, Forest drew level from the penalty spot and Barnsley scored a last minute equaliser, leaving Charlton needing two points for automatic promotion. Manchester City won 4-0 against Crewe and Ipswich beat Port Vale 3-0 which meant that Charlton’s lead at the top was eleven points over City and fourteen points over Ipswich and Barnsley.
New Records: Charlton broke their club record points totals for a 42-match and 46-match seasons. The point against Forest was the club’s 89th - one more than 1997/98; the equivalent of 62 points (awarding two points per win) which was one more than the best-ever season of 1934/35.
Crash: 5,200 supporter travelled to Forest, most of them taking advantage of Charlton’s free travel - financed by the Directors. A total of 78 coaches were on the road and four of them were involved in a crash, less than two miles from the City Ground. Fifteen received injuries (one having twenty stitches inserted in a lip wound) and were taken to hospital.
