The Lakers head back home for a scheduled matchup against the DEFENDING CHAMPIONS, the San Antonio Spurs!!! The last time the Lakers and Spurs faced each other was during the 1999 Playoffs. IRL and in my NBA Live 99, the Spurs utterly HUMILIATED the Lakers, sweeping them with a broom out of the Great Western Forum! Now they face each other again for the first time since the 1999 Playoffs in Staples, and the Lakers do not want history to repeat itself in their new home arena. Shaq, Kobe and Nolan had a pre-game interview, and all three of them said that getting swept in the 1999 Playoffs hurt them real badly, and they don't want their fans to feel that pain again in Staples (Nolan went on to say how annoyed he is that his former teammate and rival Trent Grazer won a championship before he did), so they are going to play with all the heart they can muster, but Phil Jackson always reminds them to play smart too, trust their instincts and their teammates and not be selfish with the ball, especially against the defending champions.
Controlling Tim Duncan in NBA Live 99 was fun, he gives defenders a hard time. But playing against him is challenging. I can't wait to play as the Spurs again in NBA Live 2003.
Fun fact: Shaq is the one who gave Duncan the nickname "The Big Fundamental".
Fun fact #2: Terry and Jerome were both in the 1991-1992 Portland Trail Blazers when they faced the Chicago Bulls in the 1992 Finals.
