There were jubilant scenes on the streets of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, on Thursday (21/05) following the sudden resignation of President Suharto after 32 years in power. At the national parliament complex, some 1,000 students occupying the site danced and sang the national anthem as the announcement came in the form of a brief, live television address by the outgoing leader. In his first address to the public at the Presidential Palace, Habibie said he was committed to continuing a programme of reform but that it must be done gradually and constitutionally. Influential Moslem leader Amien Rais said on Thursday he had
told Indonesia's new president he regarded his presidency as temporary and also called for former president Suharto and his family to stand trial.
