The end of the 30-year Aceh conflict in Indonesia, in 2005, is regarded as one of the great successes of modern diplomacy and conflict resolution. The independence conflict, which cost many thousands of lives, is a rare example of a secessionist campaign that was successfully solved through a negotiated settlement that kept the territory within the 'parent' state. In this video, I explore the Aceh dispute (or Aceh Disturbance as its known in Indonesia) and explain the tragic event that led to its resolution.

Armed campaigns for independence rarely end in success. Usually, if a territory is lucky, the best it can often hope for is de facto statehood. More often than not, separatist conflicts end in defeat for the insurgents. Occasionally, however, a comprehensive peace agreement is reached that allows the insurgents to lay down their arms. One of the most successful such examples in recent years concerns the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), which waged a 30-year campaign for an independent Acehnese state. However, in 2005, it instead reached an agreement with the Government of Indonesia for extensive autonomy for the province. So, how did this happen? As I show, while international diplomacy played a role, the conflict was actually resolved as a result of forces behind the control of the parties that made the continuation of the uprising all but impossible.
