The Truckers in the Freedom Convoy were tired of having their freedoms curtailed. So they went to their nation's capital city to peacefully protest their government's vaccine mandate policies.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says that the truckers have unacceptable views. He called them extremists, racists, and misogynists, but they didn't leave.
The city lobbied Go Fund Me and they shut down their fundraising. Still, the truckers didn't leave. Instead, they raised money via Give Send Go.
Premier Doug Ford's Attorney General got a court injunction in an attempt to freeze their funds from Give Send Go.
Now, the federal government has invoked the Emergencies Act, giving the federal government sweeping powers to compel banks to freeze the accounts of anyone they think might be supporting the truckers-- all this without having to go through the trouble of getting a court order. This act also gives the police greater powers to quell peaceful protests.
Ottawa's new interim police chief, Steve Bell, says that the police are justified in using force against the protesters because they've been told to leave (despite their Charter rights of peaceful assembly, and freedom of movement within Canada).
If you are a Canadian, I urge you to call or email your Member of Parliament and let them know that you opposed the invocation of these draconian and authoritarian measures.
