Antibody tests for COVID-19 have been like the “wild, wild west” according to several pathologists and a former FDA commissioner. On May 4, the FDA announced tougher rules around the roughly 100 tests on the market. That followed criticism that many of the tests simply weren’t reliable.
A reliable antibody test could show if you contracted the virus — even if you didn’t previously get tested while infected. But the extent that having antibodies might confer immunity is unknown.

He walks us through exactly how to confirm a test’s status with the FDA and what you need to know before you spend money looking for results.
