Christie's 20th century art auction in New York on Tuesday night brought in 72.9 million (m) U-S dollars, including 28.6 million (m) for Pablo Picasso's "Nature morte aux tulipes."
The 1932 portrait of Picasso's mistress, Marie-Therese Walter, is believed to have fetched the tenth highest price for any piece of art ever sold.
The pricey Picasso hails from a private collection in Europe and has not been on the market since 1957.
Other Picassos brought in high prices as well: "Buste de femme assise sur une chaise" was the second most expensive piece Tuesday evening, selling at 4.7 million (m) U-S dollars.
The artist's 14-by-9 inch abstract portrait of Dora Maar - another of his mistresses - appears in "Buste de femme a la frange" - it sold for 4.5 million.
Six other Picassos painted between 1911 and 1963 were up for sale.
There were also works by Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, Paul Klee, Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollack and Roy Liechtenstein.
Chagall's 1975 "Le violoniste" - a dreamlike picture of a man holding a violin with a floating rooster carrying a couple levitates above his head - sold for 1.3 million.
All prices include Christie's commission of 17.5 percent on the first 80,000 and 10 percent on anything above that.
Christie's did not identify Tuesday's high bidders.
