A pensioner has become the first African American patient to receive a full face transplant after he suffered burns on 60 per cent of his body when his car was struck by a drunk driver.
In July 2019 Robert Chelsea, 68, underwent an extensive 16-hour surgery, involving over 45 members of staff, to become the world's first African American patient to have a full face transplant.
After being burned in a freeway accident just outside of Los Angeles in August 2013, Robert was left in a coma for six months, hopsitalised for one-and-a-half-years and underwent over 30 surgeries.
