Composed in 1959 by English collector Pat Shuldham-Shaw (1917–1977) and dedicated to Margaret Grant, representative in Devon of the English Folk Dance and Song Society, on the occasion of her retirement.
The tune became popular in New England contra dances, and New York fiddler Jay Ungar taught it to Shetland fiddler Aly Bain, who brought it back to Scotland where it became for some time the most requested tune on Radio Scotland, and is sometimes misattributed as a Scottish or Shetland tune.
Originally in A; played in G here.
