The Battle of Stalingrad was the bloodiest battle of the Second World War, and the casualties were in the millions. The Axis forces fought brutally against the Red Army who dug in around the city, and Stalingrad was heavily bombed which reduced it to a ruined landscape. But within the German Army, there was a silent killer that was claiming a huge number of it's soldiers. A significant number of German soldiers, fit and young men were keeling over and dying from an unknown cause. But why was this? These men were seemingly healthy, and were not suffering from battle wounds.
Stalingrad Heart was a condition brought on by the effects of the brutal Second World War and of the Battle of Stalingrad. Around every corner death surrounded, and the soldiers fighting in the battle did not know if the next day would be their last. They were surrounded by artillery barrages and constant attacks, and it was found that many fit and healthy soldiers were dying because of the stress of battle. This stress caused inflammation of the heart and enlargement of the heart, and made the soldiers more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke. With the constant fear of battle, it's easy to consider how these men then died.
