Have you ever been warned not to look at welding light with the naked eye? In this video, we explain the science behind this caution. When welding, three types of UV rays – UVA, UVB, and UVC – are emitted. These rays interact with different parts of your eye, causing severe damage. UVB and UVC are absorbed by the cornea and aqueous humour, leading to redness and pain. However, UVA penetrates deeper into the lens, where proteins absorb it. Repeated exposure can harden the lens, causing cataracts. The remaining UVA reaches the retina, damaging photoreceptor cells like rods and cones, leading to blindness. Unfortunately, this damage is irreversible. Understanding the science makes it clear why protecting your eyes is so important.
