A new study shows portions of the rainforest are now emitting more carbon dioxide than they absorb and the carbon sink is in decline due in part to deforestation and climate change.
For decades, the Amazon rainforest was known as a carbon sink, where carbon gets soaked in by the trees. But then deforestation decimated the landscape, taking too many trees from the Amazon and turning it into a source of carbon emission. When trees are cut down, the carbon is released plus the tree is no longer able to absorb future carbon, creating a reversal of the forest's natural behavior.
