STORYLINE:
As a full moon rose over the Arabian Sea Thursday night, jet fighters continued to launch from the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
US jets Thursday attacked a strategic Taliban garrison that blocks the way for fighters of the northern alliance to regain the northern city of Taloqan.
The attack followed a day of the most intense bombing in the air campaign so far with B-52 planes carpet-bombing front line positions for the first time on Wednesday (31/10/2001).
The Pentagon has said success of the strikes has improved in recent days since US troops went in on the ground to help the group with communications and pinpointing targets for warplanes.
Taliban claims that they have shot down an American plane near Mazar-i-Sharif have been denied by the US Defense Department.
Meanwhile, US Secretary for Defence Donald Rumsfeld said on Thursday that the Pentagon has several more teams of special forces teams ready to go into Afghanistan.
The US troops are needed to improve targeting for American bombers beyond what is being done by the small number of special forces now on the ground in northern Afghanistan.
