"Today, as opposed to 10 years ago, today you have over half a million per 6 month period, over a million people go through those crossings every year, so that means over 10 years, about 10 million crossings. And what that really does is to build confidence between the two communities. It means that they get to know each other better and it builds trust."

"Right before the war of '74, for at least the last 2 or 3 years, I had a number of Turkish-Cypriot classmates, so when the borders opened in 2003 I thought I might as well find them. It wasn't that I was very close to them but I really wanted to get to know them more because after about 30 years of separation, I wanted to get to know my Turkish-Cypriot compatriots."

"The opening of the gates has opened a big door for the Turkish, especially for the Turkish Cypriots, because we were in a sort of enclave. I mean we were... we didn't have any relations with the outside world, but with the opening of the borders we were able to make or meet friends which we haven't seen for a long time and also have close ties with the whole world."

17. SOUNDBITE: (English) Professor Hubert Faustmann, political analyst and Associate Professor of History and Political Science at the University of Nicosia:
"It worsened the prospect for settlement, inasmuchas it weakened the newly ruling Greek-Cypriot President. The prospects for a solution are not as good as they used to be. The Greek Cypriots will be very busy with themselves. A solution is costly and there is less money now, or hardly any money if any money left, to finance that. So I think that the wider repercussions, the political repercussions, of the economic crisis are more significant for reunification, the economic repercussions will be part of the general recession that the Greek-Cypriots will be going through."
