About The Choir Of New College, Oxford:
New College Choir has a world-wide reputation for musical excellence. Our founder, William of Wykeham, specified in the statutes that a choir of men and boys should sing daily services in chapel and the twenty-first century college is still proud to maintain this tradition of choral worship.
The choir is composed of boy choristers and choral scholars - altos, tenors and basses who are students in the college and apply through the UCAS admissions process. The University of Oxford holds auditions each September for singers applying to hold choral scholarships.

All singers must apply to the college via the normal admissions process. The choir encourages students in all subjects, other than medicine. Most choral scholars (known as academical clerks in New College) tend to read arts subjects which fit more easily round the choir’s routine. As well as their choral scholarship they enjoy a number of benefits, including guaranteed rooms in college, subsidised meals and free singing lessons.
The Organist, Robert Quinney, is always happy to talk to sixth-form students interested in applying for a choral award. The Assistant Organist, Donal McCann, runs a Sixth Form Scheme which enables young singers to gain the experience of singing Evensong in the choir before applying.
There are also a number of professional singers, known as lay clerks, who contribute to the high standard the choir enjoys. Vacancies are advertised on the choir website as they arise.
The choir is assisted by one or two undergraduate organ scholars, who play for the daily services and assist the Organist and Assistant Organist with the training of choristers. New College organ scholars gain invaluable training and performing experience which sets many up for a career as professional musicians.
Organ scholars should apply via the University of Oxford Organ Award scheme, which gives details of the standard required and the entry process, which takes place in September. Organ candidates currently take both music and academic tests in September. The Organist is always happy to meet potential organ scholars and give advice on applications.
