Fall is one of the seasons when I do a lot of gardening. The Elephant Ears, mainly Colocasias need to be dug up and put into the greenhouse. The Canna Lilies are tall and are leaning and falling over from windy days. The Banana plants are growing great after propagating them last winter and now I'm propagating a Red Abyssinian Banana plant. The tropical garden is slowly deteriorating from the peak summer months.
The Colocasias are losing their leaves and I dig them up before they lose all their leaves. I will store them in my greenhouse, some in water only, some in muddy water and some in sphagnum moss. The Alocasias are hardier than the Colocasias because their leaves are thicker and petioles stronger.
The Canna Lilies are almost all done blooming flowers now that summer is over. Instead of deadheading them, I cut them lower on the stalk so that they don' t fall over in heavy winds.
The Banana plants are holding up well. I cut down one of my Red Abyssinian Bananas to propagate it. I have done it before and hope this propagation works just as well. Fall is when I dig up many of the tropical plants that I want to put into my greenhouse.
