“BNC Live” host Tashanea Whitlow says Benton Harbor’s water crisis is one of many, and she’s joined by Drs. Mustafa Santiago Ali and Sweta Chakraborty to discuss environmental racism and its impact on communities.
Families across the country, especially in Black and Brown communities, have been upended by water scarcity, air pollution and hazardous waste. Environmental racism is the epitome of systemic racism, or “where we place everything that nobody else wants,” says Ali. It heavily impacts African Americans, Latinos, Asian and Pacific Islanders and Indigenous communities as well. Simply put, it puts peoples’ lives in danger. The ongoing water lead crisis in Benton Harbor is “most definitely” an example of environmental racism. Lewis and the doctors go into greater detail, tapping into legislation that needs to be passed to ensure these communities aren’t forgotten.
