About Showa Kinen Park:

Showa Memorial Park (Showa Kinen Koen, 昭和記念公園) is a national park located in Tachikawa City, the suburb of Tokyo. The park was opened in 1983 to commemorate the emperor’s Golden Jubilee, and there is a small museum dedicated to the Showa emperor at the site.

It’s the largest park in Tokyo with the vast space of 1,653,000 square meters and consists of lawns, flower fields, Japanese garden with pond, Western style garden, promenade, Bonsai museum, and many other facilities. Visitors enjoy leisure activities, picnic and watching seasonal flowers at the park through the year.

Various kinds of seasonal flowers and plants can be seen at the park including Cherry Blossoms and Tulip during spring, Hydrangea and Sunflowers during summer, and Cosmos and Ginkgo Trees during autumn. There are several events held at the park through the year such as a flower festival in spring and illumination event around Christmas season.

Showa Memorial Park is Tokyo’s top spot for cherry blossoms and autumn leaves viewing. There are about 1,500 trees of 30 varieties of cherry blossoms at the park which can be enjoyed till mid April usually. Tulip and Rapeseed Flower start flourishing following by cherry blossoms through spring. In autumn, the park attracts visitors by colourful autumn leaves including Ginkgo and Maple trees usually from mid November.

Most of famous cherry blossoms and autumn leaves spots in the central area of Tokyo are extremely crowded during the season, but as the park offers the extensive space, you can freely stroll and have picnic while enjoy watching the trees and flowers without fuss.

Besides seasonal flowers, there are numbers of facilities in the park such as playgrounds, swimming pool, rental bicycle, cafes, restaurants, shops and more.

If you wish to relax in nature while being in Tokyo, Showa Memorial Park is the perfect getaway from the city. The nearest station, Nishi-Tachikawa Park can be accessed from Shinjuku Station within 40 mins by JR Chuo Line and Ome Line (change at Tachikawa Station).
