Most of my favorite fantasy books are filled with grey characters, dark worlds and "realistic" (honestly heartbreaking) consequences! Let's discuss some of the best Grimdark fantasy books I've read!
Until I started researching for this video, I didn't realize that Grimdark had controversy. From the original concept of grimdark (that came from Warhammer 40k) to label our fantasy books grimdark, there is a spectrum! I saw active discussions on whether or not Malazan was Grimdark, or even Robin Hobb. So please take into consideration that! I tried to adjust to the description that I found of grimdark being: grey characters, a world filled with war and with a very not hopeful tomorrow, and somewhat realistic themes (that tackle less the "hero" vs "villain" and more the "we are all people doing whatever we can/want for our own goals).
I also used my little helper Thai to analyze and research Grimdark videos—her help was key to identifying 2 fantasy series that appeared repeatedly labeled as Grimdark but that I haven't read yet!
