This song is for Jimmy, the little boy in a wheelchair who showed up one Saturday morning at a supermarket where I was shopping. What happened next has stayed with me the rest of my life.
The song title comes from the Book of Hebrews in the New Testament, where we are urged to welcome and show hospitality to everyone we meet because sometimes, without realising it, we are welcoming God's own messengers. Or as the old translations put it, we are ... 'Entertaining Angels Unawares'.

LYRICS:
(Intro)
Ah-ha ... oh-ho ... mmm-hmm ... yeah yeah
(Verse 1)
We have come from every corner, we have come from many lands
We have come from every place that you might know
We are sailors we are pirates, we are ships out on the sea
We are mermaids, we are monsters from below
We believe in God the Father or fairies in the garden
Some say “we believe in nothin’ and who cares?”
But whatever we believe in, there’s one fact we can’t deny
We are entertaining angels unawares
We ignore them in the hallways, walk past them in the street
Brush by them as they’re coming down the stairs
In our haste we do not see them so I say it once again
We are entertaining angels unawares
(Chorus)
Ah-ha ... oh-ho ... mmm-hmm ... yeah yeah
Ah-ha ... oh-ho ... yeah, we are entertaining angels unawares
(Verse 2)
Listen ...
I was sitting at the shops one day minding my own business
When this guy turns up with a kid in a wheelchair
He was strapped in, wired up, making weird and crazy noises
I have to tell you I couldn’t help myself but stare
Then the carer says: “Hey Jimmy, this will only take a moment
I’m gonna make a call here from this public phone”
But Jimmy’s not responding, he’s just staring into space
I think: “this kid’s clearly in a world of his own”
Then a strange thing happens, I’m still staring at the boy
When his head kind of tilts around this way
Next thing he’s looking me fair square in the eye
It’s a look that I remember to this day
I feel frightened, naked, I feel God’s sake so ashamed
I await his condemnation but I feel none
In that moment I’m transported to the world Jimmy calls home
A world I foolishly believed was not the real one
I don’t know who is looking at me now, Jimmy – or maybe Jesus
And to tell you the truth I hope I never know
We just sat gazing at each other with tears in our eyes
As we felt love join us from our souls
Well you can talk about salvation, talk about the truth
Words and doctrines Jimmy’s mind could not conceive
But I swear on the memory of that wheelchair-ridden boy
God doesn’t give a damn what we believe
(Chorus)
Ah-ha ... oh-ho ... mmm-hmm ... yeah yeah
(sing it for Jimmy)
Ah-ha ... oh-ho ... mmm-hmm ... yeah yeah
Ah-ha ... oh-ho ... mmm-hmm ... yeah yeah
Ah-ha ... oh-ho ... and this time … I’m singing for you ...
(Verse 3)
I want to thank you all for being here, for giving me your time
I want to thank you all for joining in this sing
In your voices I hear music, harmonies and choirs
Like the holy hosts of heaven are singing along
I see rows of living history, poetry and mystery
Reflected back to me in the candlelight
And I see heroes, villains, messengers of God
I see angels here in front of me tonight
I see rows of living history, poetry and mystery
Reflected back to me in the candlelight
And I see heroes, villains, messengers of God
I see angels here in front of me tonight
I see angels ... ah-ha ... in front of me tonight
