The Black Christmas bushfires mark the longest bushfire emergency in New South Wales history, with the outbreak of major bushfires in the Cessnock, Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury and Penrith areas. Burning for over three weeks from December 25th 2001, overall 3000 square kilometres were burnt, with 121 homes being destroyed across the state.
