Ukrainian 'Cyborgs', who defended the Donetsk Airport for 242 days, have left the strategic installation after it was completely destroyed.
The airport was first attacked on May, 25, when Kremlin-backed insurgents representing the so-called Donetsk People's Republic, stormed the complex.
The history of defending the Donetsk Sergey Prokofiev International Airport began the next day when Ukraine's army destroyed the firing positions of insurgents. 'Cyborgs' controlling the airport from that day.
Fighting at the airport intensified at the end of the August when pro-Russia militants claimed it was under its control. 'Cyborgs' hung Ukraine's blue and yellow flag from the traffic control tower in response.
A script of recorded audio conversation between two insurgents was published to the Internet in the fall. Ukrainian soldiers defending the airport were as "not humans, but cyborgs."
As the airport crumbled under heavy artillery fire, it grew in symbolic significance. 'Cyborgs' were able to reach the airport only after the Russian-backed insurgents checked them. They were allowed to take only one gun with them.
All the terminals and the runway have been destroyed. 'Cyborgs' say more battles with Kremlin-backed insurgents are likely.
