This is a great way to add variety to your Bossa Nova and Samba grooves. It is also much easier to play this groove quieter than with sticks, so it is useful for low volume situations.
Using a brush in the right hand, sweep eighth notes, inward then outward, and without picking up the brush. This emulates a shaker sound, and replaces the ride cymbal. Using a stick in the left hand, play the clave pattern of your choice with the cross-stick approach.
