Jama Masjid Delhi also known as Masjid-e-Jahan-Numa is Second Largest Mosque In India. Jama Masjid History dates back to the Mughal period. It was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan between 1650 and 1656. Located in the Mughal capital Shahjahanabad (present-day Old Delhi), it served as the royal mosque of the Mughal emperors until the end of the empire in 1857.
Jama Masjid has three large red sandstone gates for entry and exit. The most important of these is the three-story eastern gate, which was historically the imperial entrance reserved for the emperor and his associates.
Jama Masjid was considered a symbolic knot of Islamic power throughout India It was also a site of political importance during the British rule.
The mosque was built according to the Jama Masjid of Fatehpur Sikri and this is reflected in its exterior design. However, the interior of the mosque resembles that of the Jama Masjid in Agra.
Mostly red sandstone and white marble have been used in the mosque. The prayer hall has three marble domes. The interior of the hall has seven mihrabs on the western wall. The central mihrab is intricately decorated with marble. The square courtyard of the mosque is made of red sandstone. In its center lies a marble ablution tank.
A white cabinet is located in the northern gate containing the relics of the Prophet Muhammad.
There are minarets on each sides of the mosque. These minarets are 40 meters high and striped with white marble. Tourists can go to the top of the minaret but a ticket is required to go up to the top. Each minaret has about 130 steps.
