Mass protests are breaking out in Pakistan following the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan – which is a “very dangerous” situation yet “very typical” of Pakistani politics, says Former NSW Labor treasurer Michael Costa.
“Every time there’s a change of government there’s corruption charges or some form of punitive measure taken against the outgoing leader,” Mr Costa told Sky News host Rita Panahi.
“This doesn’t surprise me and unfortunately it sets the basis for a military coup and that’s what you’ve really got to worry about in this context.
“Clearly what they’re trying to do is ensure that Imran Khan doesn’t run in the next presidential election where he’s got a good chance of winning.”
