We are an organic flower farm here at Ward’s Farm. One way we support sustainability in farming is with the use of cover crops.
🍀 Not only is Crimson Clover absolutely beautiful (& perfect for your Spring photoshoots), it’s beneficial to the land!
🍀 We use Crimson Clover as a cover crop during our ‘off’ season to help repair soil and add nutrients back into the ground. Clover adds nitrogen to the soil without the need for any fertilizer. It provides the highest amount of nitrogen to the soil compared to other cover crops. Crimson Clover acts as a nutrient scavenger, bringing up nutrients from deeper in the soil.
🍀 The clover is great for pollinators like our honey bees. It is an important source of nectar in the beginning of the warm weather season before our cut flowers start to bloom. The long length of the clover blooms produce ample amounts of sweet nectar.
🍀 The root system of clover helps to stop soil erosion. It prevents nutrient runoff and allows greater amounts of precipitation to enter the soil. This helps to build the soils for future crops (like our flowers!)
🍀 Crimson clover serves as a habitat for beneficial insects that prey on small pests. It is effective at suppressing weeds when planted in the fall.
🍀 We are here to grow beautiful flowers for the community and that means working in harmony with nature!
