Hi there, Lyndall Pinchen, Canine Naturopath from Canine Vitality back again today with part two of my 3-part blog series on autoimmune disease in dogs- what’s really going on. In last week’s blog post we talked about what autoimmune diseases were and what I believe are the 5 top causes of them in our dogs from a naturopathic perspective. And while that’s all good, I am sure that those of you who have a dog that has been diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder really just want to know how they might be able to treat and maybe even reverse this naturally. Is that you??? Maybe it is! So today, we’ll be looking at 5 steps to overcoming these complex diseases. And while this information is general in nature, implementing these 5 steps will see your dog well on their way to rebalancing healing. So let’s take a look at what these steps are!
STEP 1: ELIMINATE FOODS THAT TRIGGER AND AUTOIMMUNE RESPONSE – foods like wheat, corn , rice, soy, dairy and sugars are all known to trigger off an autoimmune response. These are all commonly found in processed foods so it makes sense that we eliminate these from our dog’s diet, even those ‘grain free’ versions which are still starch based. As autoimmune diseases have a pattern of chronic inflammation, an anti-inflammatory diet is a key factor in treating it. What does this mean? Well for the great majority of dogs, an organic raw diet based around raw meaty bones, muscle meats, good fats and small amounts of plant matter is ideal but there are some dogs that suffer from autoimmune diseases (eg- IBD) that may initially need lightly cooked foods like organic meats and vegetables to allow them to heal. Always check this with your holistic practitioner before changing diet to see what is best in your dog’s case.
STEP 2: HEAL YOUR DOG’S GUT
Those of you who know me know that I am a big believer in keeping your dog’s gut strong and healthy. Issues around what is known as leaky gut syndrome are as much of a problem now in our dogs as they are in us as humans and there are a number of factors that influence this. You can read more about leaky gut in my blog but suffice it to say, it is essential that we heal our dog’s gut as this is one of the main causes of autoimmune disease as you might remember from last week’s post. Using an anti-inflammatory diet along with bone broth, herbs, gut healing nutrients and good fats we can help our dogs’ guts heal and this goes a significant way to reversing the autoimmune disease due to the way it helps to balance the immune system. I always recommend doing a leaky gut regime under the guidance of an animal Naturopath or similar practitioner who can lead you through this in the best and most effective way.
STEP 3: TREAT UNDERLYING INFECTIONS: we saw last week that underlying infections can also be a contributing factor to autoimmune disease. Viral, bacterial and yeast infections in particular seem to be triggers for many autoimmune disorders. It’s important here though to be careful not to rely on treating this using antibiotics and other medications which will actually further damage the gut and immune system and ultimately make things a whole lot worse. There are a wide variety of herbs, and nutritional supplements that can be effective against a wide range of infectious agents. Take for example if your dog is suffering from an underlying yeast infection. Herbs like Garlic, Pau d’arco, Barberry, Calendula and Oregano along with supplements such as probiotics can help your dog overcome this without the need to rely on antifungal drugs. Of course, once again please always check with your practitioner to get the right regime for your dogs needs. This is also important to do as there are some herbs that should not be used when there is an autoimmune disease active. Herbs such as Echinacea for example are not recommended due to their ‘boosting’ nature. As autoimmune diseases are an overactive state, we don’t want to stimulate it further.
