Dr. Clevens: What is Otoplasty? Otoplasty is a procedure that is performed for protruding ears. Some people have large or protruding ears usually present since birth and often times prominent ears will run in the family. The purpose of an Otoplasty is to correct that protruding ear and pin the ear back, so it has a normal shape and a normal contour. So, it's no longer protruding away from the side of the head. Otoplasty is most commonly performed on both ears at the same time. The Otoplasty procedure itself is performed in the surgical center.
Patients can either undergo sedation or they can be asleep for their procedures. In my experience, Otoplasty on both ears typically takes about an hour to an hour and a half to perform. After your Otoplasty your procedure we put a large bulky dressing in place that stays in place for a couple or few days. Most patients find that they are able to go back to work or school resume most of their ordinary daily and social activities about five to seven days after Otoplasty. The Otoplasty procedure is a permanent procedure, it should never have to be repeated. If you're concerned with the shape or the appearance of your ears, I'd love to discuss Otoplasty with you.
