Relieving spinal cord compression symptoms with a single radiation treatment
Spinal cord compression more specifically metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC) is one of the ominous causes of back pain where there is a compression of the thecal sac and its components by tumor mass. Spinal cord compression develops in approximately 2.5% of patients with metastatic cancer and maybe the first presentation of someone with the cancer. Metastatic cancer of course originates from a primary tumor be it the lung or breast cancer. This cancer can metastasis into the spine.
Metastatic tumors in the osseous vertebral column account for 85% of cases of spinal cord compression. As tumor grows in the epidural space, it generally takes the path of least resistance and encircles and compresses the thecal sac. As the epidural venous plexus becomes obstructed, vasogenic edema may develop in the white matter and eventually the gray matter of the spinal cord, culminating in spinal cord infarction."
Metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC) is an oncological emergency that describes when tumours (usually having spread from another part of the body) grow in the spinal column and compress the spinal cord.

Dr. Nora speaks about improving mobility for patients with spinal cord compression with a single dose of radiotherapy in place of a longer course.
Highlighting the burden of longer treatment for patients with poor prognosis, Prof Hoskin describes how a single 8 Gray dose of radiotherapy delivers relief and helps maintain patient mobility and independence equivalent to the lengthier course of 5 x 4 Gray.
Dr. Nora does note an increase in toxicity associated with the higher dose, noting that further trials of precision radiotherapy may help alleviate these side effects, and describes the differing international regimens.
