This week, we explore Auckland Botanical Gardens, a modern botanical garden that was opened to the public in 1982. I worked at the gardens for three years from 1983 and have seen them go through some transformations. The gardens are more than just collections of plants. The plants are now more often arranged in various groupings of exotics and natives, more truly reflecting how people grow plants in their own gardens. The Gardens have virtually eliminated all pesticide sprays, so you can walk around knowing that there are no toxic chemicals. Over the forty years I have been visiting the gardens, it has gone through many positive changes, and there is always something of interest to discover. A great resource for people interested in plants, landscape design, or botany. Covering 164 hectares, the gardens are extensive and maintained to a high standard. The Gardens have received many awards and are a worthwhile visit, they are open and free to the public.
