Neuroscientists can now record the activity from hundreds or even thousands of neurons simultaneously, generating huge amounts of complex, high-dimensional data.
Now, researchers must figure out how to make sense of this data and show how it can be used to understand how the brain works.
In a new review, Janelia Group Leaders Carsen Stringer and Marius Pachitariu provide scientists with a guide to analyzing these large-scale neuronal recordings.
The researchers examine advances in large-scale recording technology over the past decade and recent developments in tools and approaches for analyzing this complex data. They describe how these analysis methods have been used to make progress on longstanding questions in neuroscience and offer a glimpse of what progress can be expected in the future and what challenges lie ahead.
