"We're smiling quite quietly to ourselves, because certainly there's been a lot of talk of recession, but Christmas for us has been exceptionally strong. We've probably seen no more people in our stores than last year, that's been fairly flat, but we've certainly seen a far greater spend than last year, mainly on diamonds and jewellery and some of those items. So we're certainly not fearful of a recession from where we're sitting."

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of people queued outside London's Selfridges store on Wednesday morning, as shoppers across the United Kingdom headed to the shops for the traditional Boxing Day sales.
Despite fears that Britain may be sliding into recession, there was little sign of an economic downturn as hundreds of shoppers flooded into Selfridges hoping for a post-Christmas bargain.
"We can straight from the train, straight the way in, we saw the Gucci queue and thought no we'll bypass it so we've just done the rounds here. My daughter is here somewhere lost," said one shopper.
Another shopper was reluctant to get started: "I've just seen the queues. I'm a little scared. My sister's made me come shopping," she said.
Despite grim economic forecasts, recession fears didn't affect Christmas sales for Selfridges, which reported an increase on sales from last year.
"We've probably seen no more people in our stores than last year, that's been fairly flat, but we've certainly seen a far greater spend than last year, mainly on diamonds and jewellery and some of those items. So we're certainly not fearful of a recession from where we're sitting," said operations manager at Selfridges, Sue West.
Discounts of up to 60 per cent were offered on a wide range of goods in the store, with the most sought after items being Gucci handbags and luxury ladies accessories.
Many London shops started their sales early this year, hoping to counterbalance disappointing sales figures for December by offering larger discounts and starting their sales early.
