A lawsuit filed in Tarrant County, TX on Wednesday accused a teen member of a Gateway Church youth group of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl in 2017, according to court filings.
The lawsuit, obtained by WFAA on Thursday, contained sexual assault claims against 2 teenagers who attended weekly youth group meetings on Wednesday nights in 2016 at The King's University in Southlake, near Gateway Church.
The lawsuit claims that a 13-year-old girl, whose parents were "devout and active members of the church," was groomed by a then-17-year-old male and sexually molested at youth group sessions beginning in late 2016 and early 2017.
The lawsuit cited both the defendant and Gateway Church as defendants, alleging that Gateway did not do enough to prevent the alleged assaults.
The defendant was later arrested in a second child sex abuse case and sentenced to 4 years in prison in 2022.
The lawsuit filed this week stated that the defendant's conviction was unrelated to the lawsuit.
This complaint comes after Gateway Church announced that its annual conference will be canceled due to separate child sex abuse claims against its founder, Robert Morris, who resigned earlier this summer.
Cindy Clemishire accused the former senior pastor of molesting her when she was 12, in the mid-1980s.
Shortly after the allegations surfaced, Robert Morris resigned, and Gateway Church accepted his resignation.
3 church elders and Morris' son, Pastor James Morris, have also announced temporary leave of absence while an outside law firm investigates the charges against Robert Morris.
According to the girl's parents' new lawsuit, youth group meetings at King's University frequently had more than 200 children ranging from 6th grade (11 to 12 years old) to 12th grade (17 to 18 years old) "with little or no supervision by Gateway's youth counselors, pastors, leaders, chaperones, or volunteers."
The lawsuit claims that the then-teenager "cynically used the biblical beliefs and teachings of Defendant Gateway's pastor and ministers to convince 13-year-old [victim] that it was the will of God, and the leaders of Defendant Gateway, that she submit to him because he was a male and she was a female."
According to the lawsuit, "there were surveillance cameras on the building above the areas where [victim] was sexually assaulted but nobody from Defendant Gateway ever came to [victim]'s aid."
According to the lawsuit, the victim is not the only member of the youth group who has been sexually attacked by the teenage boy at Kings University.
The lawsuit defendant, now 25, remains in prison for an unrelated sex assault conviction.
He is currently incarcerated at Liberty County's Hightower Unit and has been parole-eligible since October 2022, according to jail records.
He was admitted to a sex offender treatment program in October 2023 and is expected to be released on parole on October 30 of this year.
The family is seeking a jury trial "to resolve all fact issues in this case" as well as monetary damages in excess of $1 million.
