Founded during the mid-1600s US state of Delaware was originally New Sweden, New York state was the New Netherlands, and New York City was New Amsterdam. Even earlier Newfoundland in Canada and also probably some parts of the eastern Canada and US were called Vinland, a Viking colony. V is pronounced like F in many Germanic languages - so could sound like Finland. The Vikings are considered to be the first Europeans to settle on the east coast of North America in around 1000 CE. The Basques have fished off the coast of North America since ancient times, and may have settled as well.
Finland in Europe is called Suomi in their language. Finland is something like the Viking name for their North American colonies, but somehow Suomi got called Finland in many European languages.
