(24 Aug 2020) Thousands gathered in central Kyiv on Monday for an anti-government rally organised by former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.
In a speech to the crowd, Poroshenko accused President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and other officials of irresponsibility and an inability to manage the country.
Poroshenko also expressed his support to Belarusian protesters who are demanding the resignation of the country's authoritarian president of 26 years.
Monday marks the 29th anniversary of Ukrainian independence.
President Zelenskiy decided not to conduct a traditional military parade for the second year in a row.
Instead he attended a solemn ceremony at Sofiivska Square in Kyiv earlier in the day.
