Driving into Mexico for the first time is a bit nerve-wracking. You have to have all of your documents in order. Then, you have to think about everything you're bringing. Food, alcohol, electronics, etc. - they're all things you need to consider before driving down to Baja California Sur in Mexico.
But one of our biggest concerns was the ground clearance of our Coachmen Galleria. We have about 6 inches (15cm) to work with and we've heard that the roads down here can be quite rough. They also wind up and down mountains and they're not very wide. That made us nervous because we have a very large van.
Not only that, but Mexico is notorious for speedbumps. Mexicans love their speed bumps and they are no joke.
In this video, you'll see how we did as we navigated our way from Ehrenberg, Arizona all the way down to La Paz, BCS. First through customs and immigration. Then through various military checkpoints along the way. We did lots of free wild camping and stayed at a Harvest Host winery in San Felipe, where we enjoyed a beautiful Merlot wine, a charcuterie board, and some great live music from two brothers who escaped from Venezuela and left everything there (including their families).
Along the journey, we stopped in San Ignacio, Loreto, and Playa Buenaventura. At a pull-off where we stopped to make lunch, we were quickly overwhelmed by a seemingly endless swarm of house flies!
It was more than just a drive through the desert - it was a unique experience the entire way.
