Iranians head to the polls
Iran is holding elections to choose a new parliament and Assembly of Experts. 290 MPs will be elected for a four-year term. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will have the final say on who will be chosen. And in the Assembly of Experts, 88 clerics will be elected for an eight-year term.They will have the power to appoint - or dismiss - the country’s supreme leader.
Opposition agrees to ‘temporary truce’
The High Negotiations Committee that represents the Syrian opposition says it will respect a two-week ‘cessation of hostilities’ scheduled to begin at midnight on Friday. But the HNC has warned the Syrian regime and its allies not “continue hostile operations against the opposition factions” under the pretext of “fighting terrorism”. The proposal for a cessation deal was made by the United States and Russia earlier this week. It doesn’t include Daesh, Al Nusra Front or other groups the UN Security Council considers terrorists.
UBS charged with money laundering
Belgian authorities have charged UBS with money laundering and “serious and organised tax evasion.” A spokeswoman for the crown prosecutor says Belgium cooperated with France before laying out charges against the Swiss bank. UBS has issued a statement saying it will “continue to defend itself against any unfounded allegations.”
FIFA passes reforms
World football’s leading authority has passed a series of reforms at a special FIFA Congress in Zurich. FIFA is also holding presidential elections. The federation has been the subject of an investigation by US and Swiss authorities. Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter was banned from the sport for six years for unethical conduct. He is likely to be succeeded by Sheikh Salman of Bahrain, currently heading the Asian confederation. The other candidates are UEFA General Secretary Gianni Infantino, Prince Ali of Jordan and Jerome Champagne. Tokyo Sexwale has pulled out.
