In Gafanha da Nazare in Aveiro district you can get in the mood for Christmas in a very special way. In this small city, there is a Christmas-lit house that you don't see everywhere and that attracts many visitors to the area every day.
For 12 years, owner Herlander Loureiro and his family have been decorating their house with eye-catching Christmas lights at Christmas time. What started out small, with some Christmas lights in the front garden, has grown over the years and the lights are now spread all over the property.
It takes Herlander Loureiro around one month to set up and dismantle the Christmas lights. More than 22,000 lights are used to illuminate the house. There are yellow lights, coloured lights, stars, bells, snowmen or luminous Christmas trees, a sleigh of lights pulled by reindeer made up of small bulbs and even an illuminated nativity scene.
The lights came on for the first time on 8 December, and Herlander Loureiro promises to switch them on every night from 6pm to 11pm until 1 January.
