For most of the pandemic, Taiwan has been held up as a "best case" example.

This time last year it was averaging zero new infections, and went 253 days without a single local case.

But today the island begins tougher restrictions on social gatherings and public venues to try to contain an outbreak that began three weeks ago.

The Guardian's regional correspondent, Helen Davidson says most people are cooperating.
