"Our research looks at how paternal programming affects embryo development and health.
Did you know that sperm carry more than just DNA? One key player is microRNA 30a (miR-30a). Its abundance is modified by environmental and lifestyles factors. But how does this affect embryo development? To investigate this, we generated a novel mouse model overexpressing sperm-specific miR-30a and utilised a miR-30a depleted embryo model.
Across both models, we observed delays in pre-implantation embryo developmental time points and reduced blastocyst cell numbers. As a result, our research suggests that sperm miR-30a is crucial for early embryo development and health. Future studies could explore screening or manipulating sperm for optimal miR-30a levels to improve embryo quality in couples struggling with male-related infertility."
