(7 Jan 1979) The four leaders of the western alliance ended a two-day summit conference on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe with an appeal to the Soviet Union not to fear normalization of relations with China. Speaking to the press at the conclusion of the talks, United States President Jimmy Carter, West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing and British Prime Minister James Callaghan pledged to pursue detente and expressed hope for early conclusion of a new strategic arms agreement (SALT).
