London North Eastern Railway J27 No. 2392 leaves Goathland Station with a Demonstration Goods Train on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway during the North Yorkshire Moors Railway 50th Anniversary Steam Gala.
J27 No. 65894, originally known as P3' No 2392, had first entered service on the 19th September 1923 with a super-heated boiler, being the last engine delivered of the last batch of this class, in an order for ten engines that had been placed on 14 December 1922 by the North Eastern Railway. Like many locomotives turned out from the NER’s Darlington North Road Works, it was allocated to Darlington shed to be run in. Very soon it was transferred to Ferryhill, from which shed it worked trains in the South Durham coalfield until 1930.At this time it was transferred to York and worked local goods trains over a number of routes, including the lines to Scarborough and Whitby.
Life continued uneventfully until the 21st November 1938 when, in bad weather while crossing the main line at York from Branches Yard to the Scarborough line, it was run into by Raven B16 No. 2363. Unfortunately, No 2392 was knocked over on to its side and suffered considerable damage. The B16 however, was only slightly damaged, but nevertheless, after some delay, both locomotives were moved to Darlington Works. At one stage it seemed likely that No. 2392 would be broken up, but the international situation of early 1939 led to a number of locomotives being reinstated that, in earlier times, might have been written off. Luckily No. 2392 was reprieved and repairs were carried out, including probably new frames. It remained at York until 1943, when a major reallocation of locomotives took place, and No. 2392 was moved to Neville Hill, Leeds. Three years later it was renumbered to No. 5894 as part of Edward Thompson's renumbering scheme. In 1950, or thereabouts, it returned to York, and in 1951 it was renumbered 65894 in the BR series, being almost the last J27 to receive its new number. No. 65894 spent almost all of its British Railways career at York, one of only a few of this class allocated there during this period. Its duties were on local freight turns (including on the York Foss Islands branch), as pilot in the York Engineers Yard, as an occasional snowplough engine, and at times as shed pilot. It also worked the last pick-up goods on the Ryedale line before closure in August 1964. In comparison with its fellow J27s working in Northumberland and Durham, No. 65894 saw little exertion, a fact taken into consideration when it was selected for preservation. In March 1963 it visited Darlington Works for an overhaul, when its superheated boiler was replaced with the older Wordsell Saturated Boiler which thus saw only four years of the new boiler being used before withdrawal.
As a finale to its BR career, with the end of steam in the North East approaching, No. 65894 was transferred to Sunderland on the 2nd October 1966 to reinforce the diminishing fleet of J27s working coal trains in East Durham. Over the next 11 months, the engine became a great favourite with enthusiasts as it worked trains on such spectacular routes as the 1 in 45 Seaton Bank and the similarly graded Silksworth Colliery branch. On the 8th September 1967 No. 65894 worked the last steam turn, the famous Blue Star Special', up the Silksworth branch with coal empties, and on the following day worked the last turn from Sunderland to South Hetton colliery. Following withdrawal, No. 65894 was moved to Tyne Dock MPD, together with a number of other locomotives awaiting disposal for scrap, but was to become the only J27 to survive and now lives happily on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
