The unravelling of the plot of The Town of No Return allows for Emma Peel to instruct John Steed, with the aid of a blackboard and a pointy stick, which could be used for corporal punishment if necessary, how it might be possible to invade an entire country with hardly anyone to be aware of a world being taken over.

Note that she has found time to do a rather good illustration in chalk. I am always in awe of anyone who can draw well using chalk. Nasty stuff. The dryness of it somehow creates a tingling sensation at the thought.

The interplay with Steed playing overeager and slightly naughty schoolboy while Emma plays the slightly more serious dominating role. The endless playfulness of The Avengers might antagonise those who do not appreciate such humour in their detective shows. Such people, however, are well served by the dour affairs which have been the staple of the genre since the early to mid-eighties so it is pleasant for the rest of us to look back and enjoy that slice of mid-sixties playfulness.
