The iconic Aloha Stadium located in Central Oahu is scheduled for demolition in late 2023.
Since its opening on September 12, 1975, Aloha Stadium has served as Hawaii's largest outdoor arena. The 50,000-seat facility located outside Honolulu has been the home to the University of Hawaii (UH) Rainbow Warriors football team.
On January 27, 1980, the National Football League (NFL) hosted its first Pro Bowl in the Aloha State with an estimated crowd of 49,800. The NFL would host the annual all-star game for 33 more seasons until 2016.
In addition, Aloha Stadium hosted a multitude of events attracting local, out-of-state, and foreign visitors. They included soccer matches, car and trade shows, and the annual State Fair.
Famous names and groups that have made Aloha Stadium their concert stage include Frank Sinatra, Chicago, Santana, The Beach Boys, Heart, Eagles, Stevie Wonder, The Police, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Madonna, U2, Mariah Carey, Snoop Dogg, Rolling Stones, Ziggy Marley, Eminem, Cardi B, and Bruno Mars.
The stadium held its last public event on Saturday, February 25, during which attendees had one more opportunity to enter the field, meet and greet former and current athletes and public figures, and reminisce about their favorite events there.
The Aloha Stadium Swap Meet & Marketplace, along with other outdoor events and activities, will continue to take place at the parking lot.
The stadium structure is expected to be demolished later this year, making way for the proposed New Aloha Stadium Entertainment District (NASED). The redevelopment will consist of a smaller stadium surrounded by residential and commercial facilities.
