STORYLINE:
Gunmen and suicide bombers attacked a police station in northwestern Pakistan on Saturday, sparking a firefight that killed one officer and three civilians, according to a local police official.
The militants struck about midday (0700 GMT) on Saturday in Dera Ismail Khan district and fighting continued for hours afterwards.
Between eight and ten attackers wearing police uniforms assaulted the station, and three suicide bombers detonated their explosives during the battle, police said.
A police officer at the scene said that there were four attackers in police uniform who started firing with AK-47 machine guns, "then police engaged all four of them, and all were shot and killed."
It was unclear why there was a discrepancy in the numbers of attackers and those killed.
The district sits at the edge of South Waziristan tribal region that served as Pakistani Taliban headquarters before the Pakistani army launched an offensive in late 2009.
