We had the incredible opportunity to host an inspiring Artist Talk with the legendary sculptor Tony Cragg at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center! Tony shared his fascinating journey, taking us from his early days growing up in an engineering family to becoming one of the most celebrated sculptors of our time.
One of the most interesting parts of Tony’s story? A moment of boredom in the lab during the late 1960s sparked his passion for art! That unexpected shift led him to art school, and ultimately to a lifelong career in sculpture. His takeaway: sometimes the most creative breakthroughs come from the most unexpected places.
Here are a few highlights from his talk:
“Who knew boredom in a lab could lead to a career in sculpture? Thanks, lab!”
“Art isn’t about mimicking nature; it’s about bringing to life something completely new.”
“Every object we interact with has a story — yes, even your coffee cup!”
“Duchamp taught me that if a urinal can be art, then my kitchen junk can definitely join the party!”
Tony also shared how he uses materials like stainless steel and bronze to reflect the modern industrial world, and how, as an artist, he believes in the power of curiosity and creativity to reshape our understanding of everyday objects. He left us with the idea that art isn’t about perfection or imitation, but about envisioning new forms and ideas that challenge how we see the world.
His talk reminded us all that art is as much about pushing boundaries as it is about telling stories—and that those stories can be found in even the most ordinary objects around us.
