Home Office fees of £1,012 for children to register as British citizens are unlawful, the court of appeal has upheld in a landmark ruling. It only costs £372 to the Home Office to process these applications which means the Home Office makes a hefty profit on each application.
Children who apply for British Registration have to normally pay a high fee of £1,012 which is not affordable for many families. These high processing fees have been a concern for many years as in some cases it prevented the families to submit such an application for their children.
The appeal court ruling found that ministers had failed to assess and consider the impact of this fee on children and their rights, pointing out that for some families it was “difficult to see how the fee could be afforded at all”.
